November Poem-A-Day 10

Something Sweet

When will I learn?
The coffee, creamy
and frothy, always
arrives before meal.

She smiles so happy
to bring me hot food
unaware I’m boiling
over cold oily coffee.

The little cheesecake
sticks to my teeth and
now the coffee needs
twice as much sugar.

I have said nothing.
I swallow self-inflicted
bitterness, remember
I was once one of those

not lucky enough to have
the luxury of this problem.
I raise my cup to her and
swallow the gift in one gulp.
